What Is a Special Enrollment Period and Do You Qualify

When it comes to health insurance, most people think of Open Enrollment, that short window of time each year when you can apply for or change your health coverage through MNsure. But what if life changes outside of that window? That’s where the Special Enrollment Period (SEP) comes in.

What is a Special Enrollment Period?

A SEP is a limited window of time outside the annual Open Enrollment period that allows you to apply for or change health insurance coverage if you’ve experienced certain life events.

Qualifying Life Events

You may qualify for a SEP if you:

  • Lose other coverage: Job loss, aging out of your parent’s plan, or losing employer coverage. (not voluntary closure)

  • Experience household changes: Marriage, divorce, having a baby, or adopting a child.

  • Move to a new area: Relocating to a new county or state where different health plans are available.

  • Other special cases: Gaining citizenship, leaving incarceration, or certain errors made during enrollment.

How Long Do You Have?

Most SEPs last 60 days from the date of the event. It’s important to act quickly, as missing the deadline means you may have to wait until the next Open Enrollment period.

What Should You Do Next?

  1. Gather documentation (like proof of job loss or birth certificates).

  2. Contact MNsure or, better yet, meet with a Briva Health Navigator to ensure everything is done correctly.

  3. Enroll before the SEP window closes.
